How to Pick the Right Shirt Fabric
Walk into any store and you'll find shirts in dozens of fabrics. But most of us pick by colour or fit — and end up with a shirt that looks great on the hanger but feels wrong by noon.
Here's a simple framework to pick fabric the right way.
1. Think About Your Climate First
India isn't one climate. A shirt that works in Bangalore's mild weather will feel suffocating in Ahmedabad in June. Start with where you'll wear it most:
- Hot & humid: Lightweight cotton (poplin, voile) or cotton-linen blends
- Hot & dry: Linen or chambray
- Year-round mild: Oxford cotton, twill, or heavier weaves
2. Consider the Occasion
- Formal/office: Poplin or twill cotton — crisp, structured, holds shape
- Smart casual: Oxford cotton or chambray — relaxed but put-together
- Weekend/casual: Linen, slub cotton, or jersey — comfort-first
3. Check the Weave, Not Just the Fibre
Two shirts can both be “100% cotton” but feel completely different. A poplin weave is tight and smooth; an Oxford weave is textured and breathable. The weave determines drape, weight, and how the shirt ages.
4. Think About Care
Be honest with yourself. If you won't iron, avoid linen. If you travel often, look for wrinkle-resistant weaves or cotton blends. A shirt you'll actually wear beats a perfect shirt that stays in the wardrobe.
5. Feel It (or Read the Details)
When shopping online, look for GSM (grams per square metre). Lighter GSM (100–140) = summer-ready. Heavier GSM (160+) = structured, cooler-weather wear.
